Former Liverpool player Jason McAteer during the second half of the win over Southampton in midweek.
lined up at the base of the Reds' midfield in the Carabao Cup clash, but 's half-time withdrawal saw the 22-year-old moved back into defense, as Alexander-Arnold's replacement, Federico Chiesa, moved into a more advanced position on the pitch.
McAteer felt that Morton looked uncomfortable in an unfamiliar role as he told club media: “I don’t think Tyler plays right-back, I don’t think he’s ever played it in the sense of that’s his position and he’s made it his own. Meanwhile, it was reported this week that Sheffield United is interested in signing Morton during the January transfer window, with claiming Chris Wilder is keen on a possible loan deal until the end of the season.
Morton spent both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons out loan at Blackburn and Hull respectively, racking up plenty of senior minutes, and was the subject of loan interest from Bayer Leverkusen in August.
However, a move to the Bundesliga towards the end of August did not materialise and he ended up remaining at as part of Arne Slot's first-team squad.
He has made just three appearances under Slot, all of which have come in the Carabao Cup, so he could be tempted by the prospect of returning to the Championship to continue his development and get regular game time.
