Wayne Rooney names club he wished he played for during career - 'It didn't work out'

Wayne Rooney has admitted he wishes he had played for Celtic during his career, having scored a stunning free-kick against them in a legends match.

Rooney featured for Manchester United as they were beaten 5-4 on penalties by Celtic after the charity match ended 1-1, with Gary Hooper scoring the equaliser. Before kick-off, Rooney was presented with his own personalised Celtic shirt and joked: "I'm not sure whether that will fit me now.

"Thank you very much for that, I appreciate it. I will put this up in my house." Rooney also went to admit he would have liked to have signed for the Scottish giants during his career, adding: "Celtic have always been a team I have followed and always wanted them to win.

"Unfortunately, I didn't get the opportunity [to play for Celtic], I would have liked to at some point to try and play for Celtic. I didn't have that chance, it didn't work out. I think they were always special games [against Celtic].

"All the Celtic fans travel in their numbers. To go there to Celtic and experience that atmosphere and that Champions League night was special. It's always special playing against Celtic."

It is not the first time Rooney has spoken of his love for the club, having revealed he has "always followed Celtic" after captaining England to victory over Scotland at Celtic Park in 2013. "I always enjoy coming here and I've been to Celtic Park a few times now and I've enjoyed the stadium so it was obviously even better that we got the victory," he said at the time.

"It was great to lead the boys out into that and it's always great to captain the team in such an occasion at Celtic Park. It was a great game to play in and great to get the win. My family and I have always followed Celtic, since I was a boy anyway, so my kids have all got Celtic kits and I always look out for the scores."

The charity match raised almost £1million for the Manchester United Foundation, with Rooney hailing the "great" work they do with young people in the local area. "It was special to be back at Old Trafford today for the Legends game, and it is all for such a good cause," he added.

"It was great to play here again. Manchester United Foundation is doing a great job and being involved for a long time, seeing the work it does first-hand, any time we can give to try to help, it's always great to do that.

"It's a great cause. It is important that we continue to do what we can, when we can, to support the Foundation and continue to put smiles on children's faces."
