The festive season has arrived and after a few days, the wedding season will also begin. In both these seasons, there is a lot of demand for gold along with food. While the demand for gold is increasing on the one hand, on the other hand, its prices are also skyrocketing.

According to the report of the World Gold Council, in the last five years, the demand for gold in India has been 700 to 800 tonnes, which can reach 900 tonnes this year. In such a situation, seeing such a liking for gold, many people also commit fraud with it. Yes, they sell fake or adulterated gold by calling it real gold. Now in such a situation, the question always remains in the minds of people whether the gold they are buying is real or not.

No gold jewellery can indeed be completely pure i.e. 100 percent pure. The reason for this is that gold is a very soft metal. It is necessary to adulterate it to make jewelry. It cannot be prepared without adulterating it with another metal.

You should know how much adulteration has happened in gold jewelry. The unit to measure how pure gold is is carat (K). You can know from this unit how much adulteration has happened in the gold jewelry you have.

How to measure the purity of gold by carat
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has divided the purity of gold into 6 categories. When you go to buy jewelry, the goldsmith asks you which carat you want. This carat decides how much adulteration has happened in the gold. From the table below, you can understand how pure a gold of which carat is.

Purity of carat gold

14K 58.5%

18K 75%

20K 83.5%

22K 91.6%

23K 95.8%

24K 99.9%

Although 24K gold is considered pure, it is also only 99.9 percent pure. This means that 0.1% adulteration is done in it as well. Now the question is how to check whether the gold you have is pure or not.

How to check the purity of gold

You can visit the website of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and check the BIS centers in your city.

Gold purity is tested at BIS centers for Rs 45.

Here the jewelry is tested in three layers in the carat machine.

The information about how pure the gold is is given in carats.

Money is extorted on making a charge

Whenever we go to buy any gold jewelry, we have to pay a making charge. Many jewelry brands tell their customers that they can get the jewelry exchanged by showing the bill. When the customer goes to exchange the jewelry, the making charge is taken from them again. In this way, jewelers take more money from the customer. Many times the making charge is shown in the bill as a waste charge or deduction charge.
