The Odisha Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced this development on Thursday, as part of efforts to improve international air connectivity and strengthen tourism and trade.

The service will be operated by IndiGo airlines thrice a week—on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The final date of commencement will be declared soon, according to officials familiar with the matter.

“From June 2025, Bhubaneswar will take flight to Abu Dhabi under the B-MAAN initiative—powered by the transformative New Destination Policy. A major stride toward connecting Odisha with the world—boosting tourism, trade, and global prospects for a Viksit Odisha,” the CMO posted on X, also acknowledging Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the support.

With this announcement, Bhubaneswar will be connected to five international destinations: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Bangkok. The Biju Patnaik International Airport currently operates flights to 20 Indian cities.

According to a report by The Times of India, “The city is attracting a lot of people, including tourists and professionals. The connectivity is sure to grow, but the government needs to plan expansion of the airport meticulously since the facility is very near to the city, unlike others,” said Akash Gupta, a frequent flyer to TOI.

The state government had earlier announced daily flights between Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam starting June. The airport is undergoing a major infrastructure upgrade, with construction of a third terminal underway to manage increasing passenger traffic.

At present, the airport has two terminals—Terminal I for domestic and Terminal II for international travellers. Together, they handle around 5 million passengers annually. Once Terminal III is operational, the capacity is expected to increase to 8 million.

The city’s domestic connectivity has expanded in recent months. In January 2025, flights were added to Indore, Dehradun, Lucknow, Jaipur, and Kochi.
