IND vs AUS Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Australia all-rounder Cameron Green has been ruled out of the home Test series against India, deciding to undergo surgery for a stress fracture in his spine. Cricket Australia confirmed last week that Green is considering surgery from New Zealand specialists who have previously helped fast bowlers including Shane Bond and James Pattinson recover from back stress fractures. As an alternative to surgery, he would have to undergo rehab and limit his bowling in the India series.

However, Green's condition was complex and the decision to undergo surgery was aimed at ensuring he could bowl for a longer period of time, a team spokesperson said on Monday. "While stress fractures of the spine are not uncommon in fast bowlers, Cam has another complication on the side of the fracture which is believed to be the cause of the injury," Green said. "Recovery is expected to take approximately six months. The decision to undergo surgery was taken with Cameron's long term future as an all-rounder in mind."

The injury is a major blow to Australia's hopes of beating India in the five-Test series starting in Perth on November 22. India have won the last four series between the two teams, including consecutive tours of Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21. While selectors have been cautious about bowling more to Green, who suffered back stress fractures as a junior and state-level cricketer, the 25-year-old Green has taken 35 wickets at an average of 35.31 and has provided great support to the team's aging attack.

His batting has also been consistent and he scored his second century in February with a brilliant, unbeaten 174 against New Zealand in Wellington. Green has batted at number four in his last four Tests, while Steve Smith batted higher up the order to replace retired opener David Warner, and his absence will mean a change in Australia's batting order. Smith has opened the innings in the last four Tests at an average of 28.50, while his career average is 56.97, so the selectors may bring him back to number four and include a specialist opener.

Victoria opener Marcus Harris, who played the last of his 14 Tests almost three years ago, did not hurt his chances of selection by scoring 143 and 52 in a Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania last week. New South Wales' 19-year-old opener Sam Constask also impressed with two centuries against South Australia, becoming the first player since Ricky Ponting to do so in a Sheffield Shield match.
