How To Make Winter-Special Amla Candy
Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is a powerhouse of nutrients and a cornerstone of Ayurvedic remedies. One of the most delightful ways to enjoy its benefits is by preparing amla candy—a sweet, tangy, and nutritious treat loved by both kids and adults. Not only does it taste great, but it also helps boost immunity, improve digestion, and promote overall health. Here’s how you can easily make amla candy at home.
Ingredients for Amla Candy
Fresh amla (Indian gooseberries): 500 grams
Sugar: 250 grams (adjust according to taste)
Cardamom powder: 1 teaspoon (optional, for flavor)
Black salt: 1/2 teaspoon (optional, for tanginess)
Method for Amla Candy
To prepare amla candy, start by washing 500 grams of fresh amla thoroughly under running water to remove dirt. Steam or boil the amla for 5-7 minutes until they turn slightly soft. Once cooled, gently press each amla to separate the wedges from the seed and discard the seeds. In a mixing bowl, coat the amla wedges with 250 grams of sugar, ensuring each piece is evenly covered.
Cover the bowl and let it rest at room temperature for 24-48 hours to allow the sugar to dissolve and form a syrup. Drain the syrup (you can save it to use as a refreshing amla drink) and spread the amla pieces on a tray lined with parchment paper.
Place the tray in a sunny spot or a well-ventilated area to dry for 2-3 days, or use a dehydrator or oven on low heat if the weather is unsuitable. Once the pieces are dry but still slightly chewy, sprinkle them with a mix of 1 teaspoon cardamom powder and 1/2 teaspoon black salt for added flavor. Toss well to coat, and store the amla candy in an airtight container for up to three months.
