Prime Minister Narendra Modi told in Mann Ki Baat on October 27 that cyber crime is increasing a lot. PM Modi has expressed concern over this new wave of digital fraud and scams. He has also asked people to be cautious.
According to the information found on the government website, in the first three months of the year 2024, about 7.4 lakh people have complained of cyber crime. This number is much higher than in previous years. There were 15.56 lakh complaints in 2023, 9.66 lakh in 2022 and only 4.52 lakh complaints in 2021.
Rajesh Kumar, CEO of Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, said that at the beginning of this year, cyber crime has caused a loss of about Rs 1,420 crore. The biggest loss in this has been due to business and investment scams. Apart from this, people have also been duped of a lot of money in the name of romance and dating.
How does Digital Arrest fraud work?
In the digital arrest scam, cyber criminals call people and scare them by saying that they have been caught in some crime. They pretend to be police and ask for money. People give money out of fear. According to a new report, 46% of cyber crime cases have been reported at the beginning of this year. Most of these cases are related to countries like Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos. These countries have become a good destination for cyber criminals and these people are targeting Indian people.
PM Modi's appeal
To make people aware, PM Modi played an audio clip of a real-life digital arrest scam. In the clip, the scammer was claiming to be a police officer and was asking for Aadhaar card details to block the mobile number. After that, PM Modi said that we should take this as a warning. He asked to report immediately if such an incident occurs.
