The question of whether the IPL franchises should have a say in the preparation of pitches for their home games has once again come into focus, following recent remarks from cricketers Ajinkya Rahane and Zaheer Khan.

While the BCCI regulations discourage teams from seeking an undue home advantage, contrasting opinions have emerged on whether the existing guidelines should be revisited.

Ajinkya Rahane, leading the Kolkata Knight Riders, expressed a preference for a pitch at Eden Gardens that would aid spinners after his team’s defeat in the tournament opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Similarly, Lucknow Super Giants mentor Zaheer Khan voiced concerns over the playing surface for their first home game, suggesting that it favored Punjab Kings more than the home side.

Former cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that the franchises should have the right to request pitches which complement their strengths. He argues that home advantage in cricket primarily stems from pitch conditions and crowd support, and without control over the playing surface, teams may struggle to execute their game plans effectively.

On the other hand, Sanjay Bangar offers a different perspective, emphasising that the teams are already familiar with their home conditions and should plan their squad accordingly. He suggests that rather than requesting specific pitch conditions after forming a team, the franchises should build their squads based on historical data and the nature of their home ground.

The debate raises important questions about whether allowing the teams greater control over pitch preparation would enhance the spirit of competition or compromise fairness in the league. As opinions remain divided, the discussion is likely to continue throughout the IPL season.
