Kendrapada: A dowry harassment case was registered at Aul police station in Kendrapada district on Tuesday by Dr Debasmita Sharma, a doctor-turned-politician, against her physician husband, Rahul Pratap Ray. Rahul has denied the allegations.

Debasmita (28) was a physician at the CHC in Rajkanika from where she resigned in March and unsuccessfully contested from Aul assembly seat on a Congress ticket. Her father and grandfather had earlier represented Aul. On Monday, Debasmita lodged an FIR alleging that days after her Dec 2022 marriage to Rahul, he had been torturing her for dowry. She claimed Rahul had demanded Rs 50 lakh to set up a private clinic in Cuttack. Debasmita claimed she was beaten up after failing to meet his demands. She had also alleged that her husband had tried to kill her while she was asleep.

Acting on the FIR, police filed a case against Rahul. “We are investigating the case,” said Sabyasachi Satapathy, IIC of Aul police station.

Rahul said she had left him six months after their marriage and went back to stay with her parents. “There is no question of harassing her. All the allegations against me are baseless,” he said.
