Bhubaneswar: With the withdrawal of monsoon from the state, above normal temperature and high humidity levels are creating discomfort for people. With the difference in day and night temperatures being high, many people are complaining of heat exhaustion, giddiness, headache along with cough and sore throat.

“I remember during Durga Puja we used to feel a nip in the air. But the weather is a big surprise this time as day temperature is too high and heat is unbearable. In addition, high humidity level makes it highly uncomfortable. Even after sunset, the humidity levels are high providing no relief,” said Bhagaban Acharya, a septuagenarian resident of Unit IV area here.

Sources in India Meteorology Department (IMD) said Oct being the transition month between monsoon and winter, the lingering moisture in the atmosphere and clear skies lead to hot and humid weather. “The day temperature in several parts of the state is above normal. Clear skies are leading to an increase in temperature and due to lack of strong winds, heat and humidity is getting trapped in the atmosphere. After two days, there is a chance of rain in some parts of the state,” said Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD’s Bhubaneswar centre.

Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum temperature of 35.7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, 3.6 degrees above normal, while maximum temperature of 35.8C was recorded in Chandbali.

The unusual weather is affecting people, especially vulnerable groups like elderly, children, pregnant women and those with existing medical conditions. “The condiiton of people suffering asthma and other respiratory diseases may worsen due to this weather, as the body’s natural cooling system stops working,” said Dr Dhananjay Das, deputy superintendent of Capital Hospital.
