Bhubaneswar: Over 20,000 workers from 24 states, including Odisha, gathered at Lower PMG Square here on the occasion of the 22nd All India Conference of AIUTUC on Sunday.

The event began with a procession from Rajmahal Square to Lower PMG Square, where a mass meeting was held under the presidentship of K Radhakrishna, all-India president of AIUTUC. Jaysen Meher, secretary of AIUTUC Odisha, welcomed the participants.

The speakers condemned the implementation of new labour codes, which they claimed dismantled decades-old labour protections achieved through workers' struggles. They demanded permanent status for millions of scheme and contract workers in organised and unorganised sectors and called for united action against the growing pro-corporate and communal policies of the govt.

World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) president Mzwandile Michael Makwayina expressed global solidarity with Indian workers. Other key speakers included AIUTUC vice-presidents Satyaban and Swapan Ghosh, general secretary Sankar Dasgupta, and secretariat member Arun Singh.

Addressing rising prices, unemployment, illiteracy and inadequate healthcare, the speakers stressed the need for worker movements. They urged workers to defeat divisive forces and uphold unity among the working class.

Earlier in the day, the inaugural session of the conference was held. International trade union leaders, including Opendra Kumar Roy from Nepal's ANTUF, Sekher Roy from Bangladesh Workers' Federation, and Tikaram Parsai from Nepal, expressed solidarity with Indian workers. Leaders from India's major trade unions emphasised the need for collective resistance against anti-labour policies and communal divisions.
