NEW DELHI: A Class 12 student student died by suicide on Thursday after school authorities confronted him about using a mobile phone and taking selfies on school grounds.

Raj Osari, 17-year-old a residing at a government hostel in Mandleshwar, jumped from the historical Jam Gate despite attempts by relatives and a security guard to stop him.

“While he was trying to jump, his relatives and the security guard posted at the site asked him not to do so, but he did not listen to them and took the extreme step,” said Khargone district Superintendent of Police Dharamraj Meena.

Osari was taken to a government hospital in Mandleshwar where he was declared dead.

The incident followed complaints from both the school principal and hostel superintendent regarding Osari's mobile phone use. His uncle, Jitendra Osari, told police the hostel superintendent had contacted him about the issue.

According to police, the school principal objected to Osari taking selfies at school. Osari reportedly responded with threats of suicide or running away.

Osari's family was called to the school but he fled before their arrival. While he returned to the hostel later that night, he left again Thursday morning, leading to a search by school staff.

Police recovered Osari’s mobile phone from the site. While initial investigations suggest fear of familial repercussions as a possible motive, police are continuing a thorough investigation to rule out other possibilities.
