NEW DELHI: Security forces thwarted a major terrorist plot by arresting five members of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in Assam.

According to Assam police, four of the JMB operatives were detained from Kokrajhar district, while the fifth was captured from Dhubri district.

The development follows the recent arrest of a Bangladeshi national who had illegally crossed the international border.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on X, stating, "Maintaining alert along the border, one illegal Bangladeshi national was apprehended by @assampolice today near the international border and pushed back."

The infiltrator, identified as Asma Akther, is among over 160 such individuals who have been pushed back from Assam.

Authorities have heightened vigilance along the 1885km-long India-Bangladesh border in the northeast following ongoing unrest in the neighboring country.
