Man held for raping woman after fake marriage promise

Kanpur: The Colonelganj police arrested a man for allegedly raping a woman after promising to marry her.

Inspector Ravindra Srivastava of Colonelganj said that the woman as living with the accused. The woman met the accused through mutual acquaintances. He gradually gained her trust and convinced her to live with him by promises of marriage.

Over the next few years, Sharma maintained an intimate relationship with the woman while continuously delaying marriage with some or other excuse. When the woman confronted him on the issue he turned violent and physically assaulted her. He refused to marry her and threatened her with dire consequences if she pursued the matter. Finally the woman approached the police on Feb 1 and filed a formal complaint against the accused. In her statement, she gave details of exploitation and assault she had to endure while living with the accused. The police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The accused fled to evade the arrest.

The police team, led by Inspector Ravindra Srivastava, launched a manhunt to apprehend him. After receiving intelligence about his presence near Brijendra Swarup Park the police arrested the accused on Tuesday and took him into custody. After completing necessary legal procedures, he was produced before the local court and subsequently sent to jail.
