Ernakulam tops Class XII results despite slight dip in pass percentage
Kochi: Ernakulam once again topped the state in Class XII state examination results, even as district witnessed a slight dip in performance compared to last academic year. According to data released by directorate of higher secondary education (DHSE), Ernakulam registered a pass percentage of 83.09%, down by 1% from the previous year.
A total of 30,992 students from 193 schools registered for the examination here. Of these, 30,846 appeared for the exams and 25,629 students qualified for higher education. Additionally, 2,626 students secured A+ in all subjects.
Officials from deputy directorate of education (DDE), Kakkanad, said the results reflected a mixed trend. While district retained its top position, results for open and technical schools were not on par with regular schools.
In technical higher secondary schools, out of 445 registered candidates, 443 students appeared and 313 (70.65%) were eligible for higher education. The lowest performance came from open schools, where only 722 out of 888 students (60.81%) qualified for higher studies.
At Govt Girls Higher Secondary School, 81% of students qualified for higher education, with 16 securing A+ in all subjects. However, the school performed better last year with a 91% pass rate. "Although it was announced that valuation would be stringent this year, many students did not take it seriously. Results have disappointed several students and only a few turned up at school today," said principal Mini Ram.
At Govt Higher Secondary School, Edappally, 85% of students qualified for higher education and 25 students secured A+ in all subjects. Principal Sankaranarayanan A pointed out that girl students outperformed boys in line with statewide trends.
"We observe a lack of seriousness among many boys. In our school alone, three male students could not pass as they didn't even appear for practical exams. This trend isn't limited to academics; participation of boys in school arts festivals and sports meets is also on the decline," he added.
While overall performance has seen a slight dip, officials from district education department said district continues to perform well due to its strong academic environment. They also noted that students who failed to qualify or wish to improve their marks can appear for supplementary and improvement examinations scheduled from June 23 to June 27.
However, a greater number of CBSE schools under Trivandrum region had a 100% pass percentage in Class XII, compared to state syllabus schools this academic year.
