Paint on CCTV cams, 17L emptied from village ATM

Ludhiana: Four-five men cut open an ATM at Lamme Jattpura village in Jagraon on Tuesday night and decamped with more than Rs 17 lakh. While ATMs being cut open and burgled is not new, the thieves in this case came prepared and spray-painted black paint on even the CCTV cameras of houses near their target.

In all, they first sabotaged 10 CCTV cameras at the bank where the ATM is located and neary areas, and only then proceeded with the crime. The thieves are said to have used a gas-cutted to break open the ATM. Police said the gang struck at 1.34 am at the ATM at Punjab National Bank ’s branch in Lamme Jattpura. They sprayed black paint on CCTV cameras installed at the ATM, bank branch and neighbouring houses.



It took the thieves an hour’s time to take away the Rs 17.14 lakh.

Bank manager Rishab Aggarwal said he got a call from the owner of a house in front of the branch at 6.30am on Wednesday that the ATM had been looted. He added he reached the branch in half an hour and saw the shutter had been cut open and a cylinder lying inside.

Aggarwal said in footage of the branch’s camera, a man with his face covered could be seen spray-painting on the cameras.

SP (investigation, rural) Sandeep Vadhera said they had got many clues in the case and they would be able to crack the case in a day or two. He added four persons could be seen in the footage of CCTV cameras before they had been spray-painted. “We suspect more people to be involved,” he said.

The SP said the thieves must have carried out a recce of the branch as they knew where the cameras were located, even the 5-6 cameras of houses in the area.

An area resident, Sardara Singh, said suspicious persons had come to the village at 1.30 pm on Tuesday. “They were asking people if there was an ATM in the area,” he said.
