Madurai: Madurai airport has achieved a significant milestone with its recent upgrade from air passenger duty (APD) grade 3 to APD grade 2 by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The upgrade, based on increased passenger and cargo traffic, marks a step forward in meeting the region's growing aviation needs after the implementation of night operations two months ago.

Alongside Madurai, five other airports—Agartala, Bhopal, Surat, Udaipur, and Vijayawada—were also elevated to grade 2 status. The upgrade is based on a comprehensive review of rising passenger numbers and air traffic in airports across the country.

According to airport authorities, grade 2 airports are equipped to handle higher traffic volumes, necessitating advanced infrastructure and enhanced operational capabilities.

According to director of the airport, P Muthukumar, this upgrade will enable Madurai airport to undertake certain development works independently, without the need for approvals from the regional office. This delegation of authority will streamline decision-making and accelerate project implementation.

The elevation to grade 2 status opens up numerous opportunities for Madurai airport. Improved infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment will enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency. It positions the airport to attract more airlines, thereby expanding domestic and international connectivity. Apart from that, it will also help in the proposed runway expansion work.

M Rajesh, an airport enthusiast, said that the upgrade is expected to boost cargo handling capacity, benefiting businesses in and around Madurai.

Additionally, the airport's enhanced status could act as a catalyst for regional economic growth, encouraging tourism and fostering trade opportunities. With the commencement of night operations just two months ago, this latest upgrade gives Madurai airport a significant boost in its quest to become a key aviation hub in Tamil Nadu, added Rajesh.
