DINDIGUL: A 65-year-old woman was arrested for violently hitting a seven-year-old girl with an iron rod, resulting in the girl being hospitalised.

According to police, M Prabhu, 36, of Pudupatti near Natham in Dindigul district, was in the business of renting out vehicles like tractors and excavators. He was married to Deepa, and the couple had two children. Their 7-year-old daughter, Preethika, was studying Class III. Preethika, who was on vacation, used to go to her neighbour R Selvam’s house and played with his children there.

Police said that Selvam’s mother, Kuruvammal, did not approve of Preethika playing with her grandchildren and warned her not to come to the house. However, on April 18 Preethika ignoring the woman's warning, went to play in her neighbour’s house. Angered by this, Kuruvammal shouted at Preethika and hit her with an iron rod. The girl suffered injuries on her face and limbs and fell unconscious. Kuruvammal reportedly picked her up and left her on the road.

Residents in the vicinity who found Preethika unconscious informed her parents. Assuming their daughter may have been hit by a two-wheeler on the road, they rushed her to Natham govt hospital for treatment. The girl was later admitted to a private hospital in Madurai for further treatment.

It was only a couple of days later, when Preethika regained consciousness, that she told her parents what really happened to her. The girl’s father, who was shocked, filed a complaint with the Natham police. Subsequently, police arrested Kuruvammal on Monday.
