Ambhora: A Scenic Haven On Its Way to Becoming A World-Class Destination
Nestled in the serene backwaters of Gosikhurd project, 70km off Nagpur, lies Ambhora — a small village that's rapidly gaining recognition for its natural beauty and architectural marvels. Surrounded by panoramic hills and boasting of the confluence of five rivers, Ambhora is not just a picturesque retreat but also a cultural treasure trove. This once-sleepy hamlet is on the brink of a transformative journey to becoming a world-class tourist destination, with a govt-approved funding of Rs 248 crore.
At the heart of Ambhora's fame is India's first cable-stayed bridge, a marvel of modern engineering that has captured the imagination of thousands of tourists. Rising 40m above the deck slab, the bridge's sky gallery offers visitors a bird's-eye view of the majestic river and verdant landscape below. Built over backwaters of Gosikhurd to connect Nagpur and Bhandara districts, the bridge represents a harmonious blend of nature and innovation. Ambhora is in the confluence of five rivers — Wainganga, Kanhan, Aam, Kolari and Murza.
"Looking down from the sky gallery was an unbelievable experience. It's breathtaking. The mountains and the long river flowing beside it provide a lifetime experience," " said one of the many tourists who have been awestruck by its grandeur.
Ambhora's transformation has been the dream of Union minister Nitin Gadkari and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who have tirelessly championed its development. Gadkari has often spoken about his vision to make Ambhora a global tourist hub. From resorts and adventure sports to water activities and cultural attractions, the blueprint for the village is ambitious and inspiring.
"PWD will be spending around Rs 200 crore, while the remaining amount will be spent by the irrigation department," said sources in the public works department (PWD). "We will be doing works like building a major parking hub at the spot, as many tourists visit the area. Besides, renovations of the famous shiv temple, Buddha temple, and dargah at the spot will be undertaken, along with organizing adventure sports."
Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is also playing a pivotal role by planning to establish a resort that will cater to the influx of visitors. Currently, multiple agencies, including PWD, irrigation department, and MTDC, are working in unison to realize this ambitious vision.
Ambhora's allure is complemented by its spiritual and historical significance. The village is home to an ancient Shiv temple, a tranquil Buddha temple, and a revered dargah, each reflecting the region's rich cultural heritage. With renovations planned under the new project, these landmarks are set to regain their glory, offering a blend of spiritual solace and architectural splendour.
The project also aims to capitalize on Ambhora's geographic advantage by introducing watersports and boating activities. "The irrigation department will be working on planning water sports, boating, and other works for the project," said a PWD official. Such activities are expected to draw adventure enthusiasts and families alike, providing a well-rounded experience for visitors.
Work on the project has already begun, with a Rs 18cr tender floated as an initial step. Although the tender process is yet to be finalized, the govt's target is to complete the project by 2026. By then, Ambhora is expected to emerge as a major hub for tourism, blending nature, culture, and modern amenities seamlessly.
The state-of-the-art Ambhora bridge itself is a testament to this vision. Built at a cost of Rs 176 crore, construction began in March 2019 and was completed in January this year. The bridge has already become a magnet for tourists, drawing approximately 5,000 visitors every week. The sky gallery alone has become a must-see attraction, offering an unparalleled vantage point.
Visitors who have already explored the area can't stop raving about its beauty. "The mountain and the long river flowing beside it provide a lifetime experience," said another tourist, highlighting the breathtaking vistas. The addition of amenities such as panoramic lifts has made the experience even more unforgettable. For those looking for a mix of adventure, spirituality, and nature, Ambhora is poised to become an irresistible destination.
