Raipur: On Thursday, as the B.Ed-trained assistant teachers' hunger strike reached its sixth day, three more educators were hospitalised due to declining health conditions, bringing the total hospitalisations to seven.

The teachers intended to conduct a symbolic protest on Thursday, planning a mock funeral of gazettes from the Chhattisgarh govt, Govt of India, and National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). However, they were denied permission by local authorities.

The demonstration which began on Dec 14 at Tuta in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar, marked its 21st day of protest for job security. Three more teachers, including one female educator, required medical attention on Thursday, according to the assistant teachers. They were transported via 108 ambulance service to Abhanpur's nearest health centre, with the female teacher's condition reported as serious. All hospitalised teachers are currently under medical supervision.

Assistant teachers Tinuraj Mahendra and Uttam Sahu were amongst those hospitalised on Thursday due to high blood pressure. According to Vikas Mishra, the movement's convener, approximately 35 teachers from the 2,900 B.Ed qualified assistant teachers facing employment uncertainty are participating in the hunger strike. The protesters remain steadfast in their commitment until their demands for job security are addressed.

The teachers are primarily seeking employment security and have urged the govt to take swift action to protect their careers. Mishra reported that while the state govt has established a committee to address their concerns, no meetings have occurred. Additionally, he mentioned that the govt has begun termination proceedings against B.Ed-trained teachers in govt primary schools across tribal Bastar and Surguja divisions.

The movement is likely to strengthen, with plans for an indefinite hunger strike, according to Vikas Mishra. The teachers have received support from Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha in their campaign.
