Vijayawada: This Sankranti season, the fervor for Pandem Kodi (Asil rooster) meat reached a fever pitch as locals flocked to markets and stalls to savor this once-a-year delicacy.

On Kanuma, the third day of the Sankranti festival, there is a deep-rooted tradition of feasting on non-vegetarian dishes, and this year was no different.

The Pandem Kodi meat, especially of Asil roosters involved in the traditional cockfights, has become a prized delicacy. Despite its steep price, which soared to ₹2,600 per kg in 2025, demand showed no signs of slowing down. Compared to broiler chicken, sold at ₹240 per kg, Pandem Kodi meat is considered superior in flavor and texture, driving people to compete for a share.

Special care is taken to prepare these roosters for cockfights. They are fed a premium diet that includes cashew nuts, almonds, pistachios, and even minced mutton. Locals claim that this unique preparation enhances the meat's taste, which is darker and richer than regular chicken. Traditionally cooked in clay pots over wood stoves, the dish has an unmatched flavor.

"In our village, it's a tradition to eat Pandem Kodi meat during Sankranti. The new son-in-law is often served this delicacy as a gesture of respect and celebration," said Metla Mohan Vinay, a techie from Peda Amiram in West Godavari district.

Markets across Vijayawada, including One town fish market, Sitarampuram Sunday market, and Mahanti Market at Governorpet, witnessed heavy footfall as locals stocked up on mutton, seafood, and other non-vegetarian items.

A few meat shops in the city offered special festival discounts to attract the buyers. Meanwhile, hotels offered special Kanuma feasts to encash the festive mood.
