IIT Guwahati vs IIT Hyderabad: A comparative analysis of their placement performance

Two of India’s premier architectural and planning institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad ( IIT Hyderabad ) and the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati ( IIT Guwahati ) are dream schools for many students who want to pursue Engineering and Technology. In the NIRF Rankings 2024, both of these institutes have grabbed a place in the top 10 in the Engineering category, IIT Guwahati at number 7 and IIT Hyderabad at number 8. In fact, since 2017, both of the institutes have found a place in the top 10 rank holders.

UG 5 year programme


In a comparison of placements and higher education outcomes between IIT Guwahati and IIT Hyderabad for their UG (5-year programs), IIT Guwahati consistently graduated more students across the three academic years. In 2020-21, IIT Guwahati had 597 graduates, with 453 placed at a median salary of ₹18.7 lakh, while IIT Hyderabad had 273 graduates, with 185 placed at a median salary of ₹16.25 lakh. Both institutes saw an increase in placement numbers and median salaries in 2021-22, with IIT Guwahati placing 583 graduates at ₹22.5 lakh and IIT Hyderabad placing 237 graduates at ₹20 lakh. In 2022-23, IIT Guwahati placed 639 graduates at ₹21.6 lakh, while IIT Hyderabad placed 269 graduates at ₹21 lakh. Higher education trends show that IIT Guwahati consistently had more students opting for higher studies, with 73 in 2020-21, compared to IIT Hyderabad 12. However, in subsequent years, the number of students pursuing higher education slightly decreased at IIT Guwahati (43 in 2021-22 and 51 in 2022-23), while IIT Hyderabad maintained a smaller but steady number of students opting for higher studies (21 in 2021-22 and 17 in 2022-23). Overall, both institutes show strong placement figures with competitive median salaries, although IIT Guwahati produces a larger volume of graduates and placements.
