Over the years, the TV show The Simpsons has been making eerily accurate predictions about future events, and lead to a stir of discussions and debates on the internet. From introducing concepts like smartwatches to predicting major global incidents, people have often highlighted how the show seemingly predicts real-life events with uncanny precision.

Taking the benefit from this, social media users frequently share clips and memes, humorously suggesting that the show's creators are time travelers. Recently, a peculiar rumor has emerged online, alleging that an episode of The Simpsons forecasted a global internet blackout on January 16, 2025.

An edited video has surfaced on social media, purportedly showing an episode from the show that suggests the shutdown would coincide with Donald Trump's inauguration , which is inaccurately stated to be on January 16. In reality, the inauguration of the American President-elect is scheduled for January 20, not January 16.
Although there is a discrepancy, many social media influencers and content creators have shared the video on Instagram, suggesting that this bizarre scenario was depicted in one of the episodes of The Simpsons and that they believe it is going to come true. Some claim a global outage, while others say it would be restricted to the US.

The edited video has now become a huge entertainment to many in the social networks who jokingly said they were going to view the reel on 16th of January. In many versions of this video, an added detail made the claim look even more silly, some underwater cable must be chewed by a White Shark.

“16 January ko recharge katam honi wala hai,” joked an Instagram user. Another added, “Acchi baat hai.” A third expressed, “This is impossible.” A fourth wrote, “Karwa de, I work from home… so, meri to off.” Many reacted to the edited clip with laughing out loud emoticons, highlighting the humorous nature of the claim.

A BBC report claimed that there had been outages due to sharks chewing through cables draped across the ocean floor. The report indicates that there have been teeth marks on the cables, not just from sharks but also from barracudas. To mitigate this problem, Google has reportedly begun wrapping its underwater cables in a Kevlar-like material to prevent marine life from chewing through them.

As the date approaches, we are only here to find out if there will really be an internet shortage on 16th January. Further, it will also be interesting to see how this evolves and whether any new "predictions" from The Simpsons get the public's attention.
