This constituency is classified as a General seat and is part of the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency. Known as a stronghold of militancy and separatism, the 2024 elections marked a significant shift with a 45% voter turnout , surpassing previous records of the last three decades.

In the third phase of the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections , held alongside 40 other constituencies, Sopore recorded a 45.32% voter turnout, according to the Election Commission of India.

In comparison, only 19% of the electorate voted in 2008, and 30% in 2014. These elections were the first after the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, followed by a delimitation exercise that increased Jammu's seat count from 37 to 43, while Kashmir gained one seat, raising its total to 47.

For many first-time voters , the key issues driving them to the polls were unemployment, inflation, the restoration of statehood , and concerns over the disempowerment of the people.

Abdul Rashid Dar, a former Congress legislator, is one of 20 candidates contesting, locked in a race with National Conference (NC) candidate Irshad Kar. The NC and Congress are engaged in a "friendly contest" in Sopore, one of five constituencies where the two parties failed to reach a consensus on a joint candidate.
