All The Taylor Swift Songs Which Hint At A Travis Kelce Reference

Hero Image
Taylor Swift is no stranger to writing songs about the men in her life. And with 'Tortured Poets Department' she let her fans into her romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end beau Travis Kelce . The couple started dating in the summer of 2023 and made their relationship public in September, just a month before Taylor turned in her finished version of 'The Tortured Poets Department.’

Though fans expected the album to revolve around her heartbreak following her split with Joe Alwyn , 'TTPD' actually had some standout lyrics which her fans believe to be a sneaky reference to Travis.

Not only does she include football references in one song, but she also describes the love as being “so high school” featuring memes that compare their romance to her song “You Belong With Me.” Here are some other Taylor Swift songs which fans think could be referencing Travis Kelce

The Alchemy

On 'The Alchemy', Taylor sings about how a new relationship reopened up her senses and brought her back to life. Swifties think this one includes lyrics about Travis thanks to all the references to American football. The chorus of this song begins with, ‘So when I touch down / Call the amateurs and cut 'em from the team / Ditch the clowns, get the crown / Baby, I'm the one to be / 'Cause the sign on your heart / Said it's still reserved for me / Honestly, who are we to fight thе alchemy?’

Taylor then references her athlete boyfriend more specifically with clear nods to games, victory, league and trophy. She sings, ‘Shirts off, and your friends lift you up, over their heads / Beer stickin' to the floor, cheers chanted 'cause they said / There was no chance trying to be the greatest in the league / Where's the trophy? He just comes, running over to me.’

Taylor broke up with Joe Alwyn in 2023, and soon after briefly dated The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. So when she sings, “These blokes warm the benches/ We've been on a winning streak,” it essentially takes a dig at Matty and Joe, since they are both British and ‘blokes’ is a British word meaning ‘boys’.

Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus

‘The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology’ is Taylor’s double album which features the song, ‘Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus.’ Though the song delves into the aftermath of a breakup, fans were quick to discover some lyrics about moving on and starting afresh. “And you saw my bones out with somebody new / Who seemed like he would've bullied you in school."

This could also be a potshot at both Healy and Alwyn. Healy is a musician and songwriter and Alwyn too is a songwriter and reportedly co-wrote a few of Taylor’s previous songs as well. So, when Taylor talks about ‘somebody new’ who looks like he would bully you, she’s using the jock stereotype to describe Kelce, and implying Alwyn and Healy are sort of nerdy.

So High School

Swifties believe that this pop rock-inspired track talks about the early stages of Taylor’s relationship with Travis. She also talks about some viral moments they have had. There's a nod to the viral clip of a young Travis playing 'Kill, Marry, Kiss' in a past interview and mentioning Taylor’s name. There’s also a nod to the paparazzi photos of him opening car doors for her in the lyrics, ‘Get my car door, isn't that sweet?’

Taylor also brings up the fact that Travis has been trying to get her attention for a while and even commented about trying to give her a friendship bracelet with his number on it after a concert. Notice the lyrics, ‘You knew what you wanted, and, boy, you got her.’

The Edited ‘Karma’ Lyrics

Who can forget the famous edited lyric in the song ‘Karma’ which became sort of a mantra for Swifties? In February this year, Kelce was present at the VIP tent of the Accor Stadium in Sydney for the Australian leg of Taylor’s Eras tour.

It’s not clear whether Travis was expecting a special shout-out from the 14-time Grammy winner on-stage but Taylor changed a line from her song ‘Karma’ which was originally written for Alwyn. Toward the end of her performance, while singing “Karma,” Swift sang “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs.” The original lyric was ‘Karma is the guy on the screen’, reference Alwyn’s career as an actor. So this was a pretty strong sign that Taylor had moved on.
