Speaking during a virtual media interaction on Monday, SA20 ambassador Donald discussed the third season of SA20, putting emphasis on the league's increasing stature and the impact of having Indian players involved.
Among the notable mentions was Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik , who is set to play for the Paarl Royals. While acknowledging the move, Donald was effusive in his praise.
“It really is incredible to have an absolute Indian legend join us. He’s such an intelligent cricketer, and for me, it’s a joy to watch and listen to him commentate. He’s truly a breath of fresh air. It’s wonderful to see an ex-international player with such a wealth of IPL experience being signed for SA20. It’ll be amazing to watch him play if he does take the field," Donald said.
"He is still a fine cricketer and can perform at a high level. Listening to the launch and seeing him being actively involved in India while promoting SA20 was absolutely superb. It was a brilliant move. Having him around will be fantastic and will mean so much to young cricketers, without a doubt," he added.
Donald credited the IPL with revolutionizing cricket , noting how its growing popularity influences leagues worldwide. “As I’ve said before, young cricketers everywhere in the world are looking up to Indian superstars and the Indian Premier League, which continues to get bigger, better, and faster every year. To have one of these stars—one of your own—playing in SA20 is an absolute masterstroke. It really is,” he added.
When asked which Indian players he would like to see in SA20 if BCCI allows the cricketers to participate in a foreign league, Donald’s excitement was palpable.
“That would be the most special thing. That’ll just put it to another level. That’ll add another level of how big this tournament can become if you're allowed to. Imagine two—oh, imagine two per team. But we'll keep it there at one. I'll have those two players for me— Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah . If I have to pick from a batter or a bowler—100 percent sure,” he remarked.
SA20 Season 3 promises thrilling action, scheduled to run from January 9 to February 8, 2025.
