BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover seeks Delhi High Court's nod to travel abroad with wife

BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover and his wife Madhuri Jain Grover have reportedly filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking permission to travel abroad together in September and October. The couple is currently under a lookout circular ( LOC ) issued by the Delhi Police and has previously been granted permission to travel abroad separately. However, now they wish to travel together. According to a report by the Indian Express, Delhi High Court Justice Sanjeev Narula has sought a status report from the Delhi Police and adjourned the matter to September 17. The couple has also challenged the LOCs before the Delhi High Court which remains pending.

The couple, represented by lawyer Giriraj Subramanium , has argued that they have complied with previous court orders that allowed them to fly abroad separately and therefore should now be allowed to travel together. They have proposed a seven-day trip to the USA from September 28 to October 7, followed by a three-day trip to the UAE.

Why Ashneer Grover and his wife are barred from travelling abroad

In 2022, the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police registered a case against Ashneer Grover, his wife Madhuri Jain Grover, and their family members for allegedly misappropriating funds, resulting in a loss of Rs 81 crore to Resilient Innovations Private Limited, the company that owns the BharatPe UPI platform.

In November 2023, as the couple was preparing to travel to the US, they were stopped at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport and informed that an LOC was active against each of their names.

In May, the Delhi High Court allowed the couple to travel to the USA in turns—one from May to June and the other from June to July—on the condition that the spouse not travelling would remain in India.

Ashneer Grover was required to provide security of Rs 80 crore, submit the original title deeds of his Gurgaon property, and hand over his Emirates ID issued by the UAE Government. Madhuri Grover also faced similar restrictions, with the court ordering her to deposit a security of Rs 80 crore and submit the original title deeds of their property in Panchsheel Park. However, after stating that they could not provide Rs 80 crore as security. Instead, they submitted original share certificates of the company.
