Ex-Rockstar developer on GTA 6 getting delayed to 2026: “...not in a position to determine…”

A former Rockstar Games developer has revealed that Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 may be delayed until 2026. Drawing from his experience with Take-Two Interactive during the development and postponement of GTA 4, he noted that Rockstar may not be able to confirm if the game will launch in 2025 (as previously announced) or if it could face delays until 2026. This statement follows rumours circulating online about the potential delay of the highly-anticipated game. However, some Rockstar employees have denied these claims, stating that GTA 6 is still on track for an Autumn 2025 release. It's worth noting that GTA 4 was originally slated for an October 2007 release but was pushed to April 2008 due to technical issues, as confirmed by Take-Two.

What the ex-Rockstar developer said
In a post shared on the social media platform X (earlier Twitter), former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij wrote: “The decision to delay gtaIV was made 4 months or so before the original release date. Any further and it's hard to make the call. R* (Rockstar) is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish.

Also:
GtaVI will sell for 10+ years and there is no competition to worry about. They are not going to release the game until they're 100% happy with it. No matter what it said in the trailer.

I have no inside info. Didn't talk to anyone.”

Before leaving Rockstar in 2009, Vermeij served as a technical director for 14 years, working on Grand Theft Auto projects like Vice City, San Andreas, and IV. Since posting, the post has already collected over 150,000 views and over 2,000 likes.

Replying to Vermaij’s post, one user wrote: “I see. Wish to ask, what do you think, will the GTA VI physics be more advanced than GTAIV? In general perspective. As Euphoria is still great and perhaps could be even better, R* (Rockstar) maybe have developed something new instead but what are the chances its going to be better?”

“Do you remember what has been polished/added etc. when GTA IV was delayed? i'm wondering how GTA IV turned out if it wasn't delayed,” a second user wrote.
