This popular, free game-creating platform will have paid titles to help users earn money; here's how it will work

Roblox has announced that it will allow game creators to offer paid video games to other users on its platform. This will enable users who develop games (that can be played inside the virtual platform) to sell physical merchandise through titles created by them. At its developer conference, the video gaming company has confirmed that it will add the ability to price certain games, (or what it calls experiences) in real currency for desktop users.

According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Roblox has promised that it will offer game creators a higher revenue share of up to 70% for paid games , but the exact percentage will depend on the price of the game.

Paid games on Roblox will be initially available on personal computers starting later this year. The company also has plans to expand its offerings to other devices in the coming days.

Roblox's introduction of paid games marks a slight shift from its established business model of free-to-play games. With this model, the company primarily relies on in-game purchases of Robux , a virtual currency used to acquire items within the platform.

To explain this move, Roblox VP of economy, Enrico D'Angelo said: “By offering our new revenue shares for paid access experiences, we're giving our existing creators another way to earn on Roblox.”

Roblox’s unique monetisation strategy

Unlike traditional gaming companies, Roblox heavily relies on user-generated content to drive engagement. The platform rewards creators of popular games with substantial revenue, with over $800 million paid to the creator community in the past year.

To further expand its monetisation options, Roblox has partnered with Shopify to enable creators to sell physical merchandise directly from their games.

Additionally, the company has collaborated with brands like Walmart and Elf Beauty to establish virtual stores within its platform, allowing players to purchase real products.
