Election Commission of India Unveils Schedule for Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana Legislative Assembly Elections
On Friday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) released the election schedule for the legislative assemblies in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana.
Jammu and Kashmir will conduct its assembly elections in three phases, while Haryana will hold its election in a single phase. Voting in Jammu and Kashmir is set for September 18, September 25, and October 1, with Haryana voting on October 1. The results for both states will be announced on October 4, according to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

- Last Date for Notification: August 27, September 5, September 12
- Nomination Scrutiny: August 28, September 6, September 13
Jammu and Kashmir will have 87.09 lakh voters, including 42.6 lakh women, across 90 constituencies. The constituencies are divided into 74 general, 7 SC, and 9 ST seats. The voter base includes 44.46 lakh males, 42.62 lakh females, 3.71 lakh first-time voters, and 20.7 lakh young voters.
The last assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014. The region was restructured in 2019 into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with the revocation of Article 370’s special status. Since then, the Union Territory has been administered by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The Supreme Court mandated that the election process be completed by September 30, 2024.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP, in alliance with Dushyant Chautala’s JJP, secured 40 and 10 seats respectively in the 90-member assembly. Manohar Lal Khattar from BJP became the Chief Minister, with Chautala as Deputy. The Congress won 31 seats, and seven seats went to Independents. The BJP-JJP alliance dissolved earlier this year over seat-sharing disagreements for the general election. The current term of the Haryana legislative assembly will end on November 3.
