Abhishek Sharma Surpasses Virat Kohli's Record For Most Sixes In An IPL Season

Sunrisers Hyderabad's batter Abhishek Sharma has etched his name in the history books by breaking Virat Kohli 's eight-year-old record for the most sixes hit in a single Indian Premier League season by an Indian player. The 23-year-old accomplished this feat during SRH 's encounter against Punjab Kings in Match 69 of IPL 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Abhishek shattered Kohli’s previous record with a towering six off Rishi Dhawan in the sixth over of the second innings, clearing long-on with an 82-meter hit. This massive strike marked Abhishek's 39th six of the season, eclipsing Kohli's 2016 record of 38 sixes.

The young left-hander stepped up after the early dismissal of his opening partner, Travis Head, on the first ball of the innings. Abhishek took charge, propelling his team to a rapid start and reaching a half-century in just 21 balls. He eventually fell for a spectacular 66 off 28 balls, including five fours and six sixes, leaving SRH at 129/3 after 10.1 overs in their chase of a daunting 215-run target.

This season, Abhishek also surpassed his previous best run tally of 426 from the 2022 edition. Currently, he has amassed 467 runs in 13 innings, boasting an average of 38.91 and a staggering strike rate of 209.41. His impressive tally includes 41 sixes and 35 fours, along with three half-centuries.

While Abhishek has been in phenomenal form, Virat Kohli remains a close contender. In this season, Kohli has smashed 37 sixes in 14 matches and is determined to reclaim his record as RCB gears up for the Eliminator game. Kohli, the leading run-scorer this season, has accumulated 708 runs in 14 innings, averaging 64.36 with a strike rate of 155.60, featuring one century and five fifties.

The rivalry between Abhishek Sharma and Virat Kohli has added an exciting dimension to this IPL season , with both players pushing the boundaries of excellence in power-hitting and run-scoring.
