According to a report by Dainik Jagran, a group of former Indian cricketers, who have participated in these veteran leagues, have approached BCCI President Jay Shah with a proposal for a new tournament modeled after the Indian Premier League ( IPL ).
"We have received a proposal from former cricketers. It is under consideration," a BCCI official stated.
Although the BCCI has not yet taken definitive steps toward launching such a league, the idea remains on the table, with the possibility of it becoming a reality in 2025.
The proposed league would include players who have retired from international cricket and the IPL. Teams would be based in various Indian cities, similar to the IPL structure. An auction system would also be part of the setup, where teams bid for players.
Currently, several private organizations run tournaments for retired players, such as the Road Safety World Series, the World Championship of Legends, the Global Legends League, and the Legends League. These events are not directly overseen by any national cricket board.
Notably, the World Championship of Legends, won by a team led by Yuvraj Singh, was held in Birmingham earlier this year with approval from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
At present, the BCCI manages two major T20 leagues: the IPL, which began in 2008 with eight teams and now features 10 franchises, and the Women's Premier League (WPL), which debuted in 2023 with five teams.
