Hitman Rohit Sharma's 5 Insane Records That Might Never Be Broken

Rohit Sharma , one of India ’s most celebrated cricketers, has officially retired from T20 internationals, capping his illustrious career by leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title. The 37-year-old veteran was visibly emotional as he celebrated this long-awaited triumph, a moment that underscored just how much he yearned for another major title after his last victory in the 2013 Champions Trophy. The victory marked his second World Cup win, adding to the 2007 T20 World Cup, although Rohit had missed out on being part of the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad.

Over his extensive career, Rohit has firmly established himself as one of India’s all-time greats, particularly in the limited-overs format. While his Test career took time to flourish, Rohit has been recognized as one of the world's premier openers since taking on that role for India in 2019. As he steps away from T20Is, let’s revisit some of the records that the Indian skipper might hold onto for many years to come.

Highest Individual Score in ODI Cricket
Rohit Sharma’s list of achievements in ODI cricket is long, but the most striking is undoubtedly his record for the highest individual score. After Sachin Tendulkar shattered the 200-run barrier in 2010, several players reached double centuries in ODIs. However, Rohit set a new benchmark with a monumental 264 off 173 balls in November 2014 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens. Returning from a finger injury, Rohit built his innings methodically, with milestones like 50 off 72 balls, 100 off 100, 150 off 125, 200 off 151, and finally 250 off 166. This score remains unchallenged to date.

Most Double Centuries in ODIs
While scoring 264 runs in an ODI is a remarkable feat, it is just one part of Rohit’s legacy. He holds the record for the most double centuries in ODIs, with three to his name. The first of these came on November 2, 2013, when he hammered 209 off 158 balls against Australia. His second, the 264, was followed by a third against Sri Lanka in December 2017, where he remained unbeaten on 208 off 153 balls.

Most Centuries in a Single World Cup
The 2019 World Cup may not bring back the best memories for Indian cricket fans, but for Rohit Sharma, it was a tournament where he showcased his exceptional form. He started with an unbeaten 122 against South Africa, followed by a 57 against Australia, and then a brilliant 140 against Pakistan. Despite some low scores, Rohit roared back with three consecutive centuries against England, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, ending the tournament with the most centuries in a single World Cup.

Record for Most Sixes in International Cricket
Rohit Sharma’s nickname, ‘Hit-man,’ became synonymous with his ability to effortlessly clear the boundary ropes. Known for his elegant batting style, Rohit surprised many by surpassing Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes in men’s international cricket. He achieved this milestone during India’s match against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup. With 620 sixes to his name, Rohit left Gayle’s tally of 553 far behind. Among active players, England’s Jos Buttler is the nearest competitor with 340 sixes.

Most T20I Appearances for India
Before the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma was one of the few active players whose career began before T20 cricket gained mainstream popularity. Alongside Shakib Al Hasan, he was among the only players to have featured in every edition of the T20 World Cup. Rohit retired with 159 T20I appearances, the highest for any Indian player. Although Ireland’s Paul Stirling, with 145 caps, could surpass Rohit’s overall tally, Rohit’s record for the most T20I matches played by an Indian is likely to stand, with Virat Kohli having retired with 125 appearances and Hardik Pandya at 102 matches.
