West Indies pacer Shannon Gabriel has officially declared his retirement from international cricket , marking the end of a 12-year career in the Men in Maroon setup. Throughout his career, Gabriel participated in 86 matches across all formats, leaving a significant mark, especially in Test cricket .
At 36, Gabriel’s contributions were most prominent in the Test arena, where he represented the West Indies in 59 matches. He secured 166 wickets in this format, with an average of 32.21. While he also featured in white-ball cricket , his impact in the shorter formats did not mirror his success in Tests.

Gabriel made his retirement official through a heartfelt Instagram post . In this post, he expressed his gratitude and reflected on his journey in the sport.
He shared, “During the past 12 years, I have dedicated myself to playing international cricket for the West Indies. Playing this beloved game at the highest level has brought me immense joy, but as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.”
He further added, “Today I am announcing my retirement from international cricket.”
Gabriel expressed deep appreciation for the opportunities provided by the West Indies Cricket Board and acknowledged the crucial support from the backroom staff throughout his career.
“Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to God for the numerous blessings and the opportunities my family and I have received during my time playing for the West Indies. Secondly, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Cricket West Indies administrators, coaches, and staff members. Words cannot adequately convey the appreciation I have for your hard work and support over the years. Last but not least, I am grateful to my teammates and all those who have stood by me and supported me along the way. You have made my journey to the top truly special,” Gabriel noted.
Looking ahead, Gabriel plans to continue his involvement in cricket by playing in club and franchise leagues around the world. He remains open to representing his country in a non-playing capacity if the opportunity arises. His career includes stints with Caribbean Premier League teams such as St Lucia Zouks, Barbados Tridents, and Trinbago Knight Riders, as well as with English county sides like Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, and Yorkshire.
Gabriel’s standout performance was during the 2020 Test against England, where his bowling brilliance led to a West Indies victory in Southampton. He dismantled the English top-order in the first innings and efficiently handled the tail in the second, securing a memorable win.
In conclusion, Gabriel stated, “Moving forward, my plan is to continue representing my country, club, and franchise teams around the world with the same love and passion I have shown throughout my career.”
