Google Enhances Quick Share: Share Files Securely with QR Codes on Android

Android users are getting an upgraded file-sharing experience with the Quick Share feature (formerly known as Nearby Share). This tool, which allows large files like videos to be shared wirelessly without internet access, now supports QR code-based file transfers—a secure and private alternative to traditional sharing methods.

How QR Code File Sharing Works

The process is simple and efficient. Instead of making your device visible to everyone nearby, you can generate a QR code for the file you want to share. Here’s how it works:

When selecting a file to send, the Quick Share feature will offer an option to generate a QR code.
The recipient can scan the QR code using their phone’s camera or scanner app.
The scan immediately initiates the file transfer between the two devices—no network or visibility concerns involved.

This approach is particularly useful in areas with unreliable networks, as it enables secure sharing without the need for internet connectivity.

Availability
The QR code file-sharing feature is rolling out as part of the December 2024 update, but for now, it’s limited to select devices. Google’s Pixel models are expected to get the feature in the coming weeks. As of now, not all units have received the update, but the rollout is ongoing.
