The National Payments Corporation of India ( NPCI ) has launched the One World UPI wallet, designed for international travelers visiting India. This wallet allows users to make Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments without the need for an Indian SIM card or bank account. The technology behind this service is the Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI).

According to NPCI, “International travellers can organise their financial needs using UPI One World. It allows for convenient loading and enables the transfer of any unused balance back to the original payment source. By enabling foreign travellers to experience the real-time payments system developed by India, we are taking a significant stride towards creating a more interconnected global digital payments ecosystem.”

Initially introduced during the G20 India summit in 2023, the One World UPI wallet is now available for use. It functions as a prepaid wallet, making it easy for travelers to send money without the complications of currency exchange, and comes with zero transaction and onboarding fees. To use the One World UPI wallet, travelers must complete a know-your-customer (KYC) procedure, which involves providing a passport, visa, and international phone number.

Currently, the One World UPI wallet is supported by NPCI partners such as IDFC First Bank and Transcorp. Travelers can access the service at select airports and merchant stores.

Loading Money into One World UPI Wallet
Travelers can load money into their One World UPI wallet using a credit or debit card. Additionally, money can be exchanged at select counters with the assistance of forex experts. There is no information yet on whether there is a limit to how much money can be loaded into the wallet or if there is an option to transfer money back to the original account.
