Delhi election results: 'Saffrun' continues in Rohini as Vijender Gupta secures facile hat-trick
BJP's Vijender Gupta achieved a remarkable third consecutive victory in Rohini, transforming what was once considered a reliable party seat into an unassailable stronghold.
Despite AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal's campaign promising free electricity up to 200 units and complimentary bus services, and cautioning lower-income groups about potential losses if BJP came to power, Rohini's middle-class urban residents - comprising traders and professionals - along with JJ clusters, remained steadfast in their support for the saffron party .
Gupta, the LoP in outgoing assembly, polled 70,365 votes, defeating AAP's Pradeep Mittal by 37,816 votes. His winning margins have consistently increased - from 5,367 votes in 2015 during AAP's peak popularity to 12,648 votes in 2020 during BJP's recovery phase, and now a commanding win that establishes Rohini as a saffron fortress.
On the other hand, Mittal's vote tally declined from 54,499 in 2015 to 49,526 votes in 2020 and 32,549 this time. Congress came in third again, with Sumesh Gupta receiving 3,765 votes.
Following the win, Gupta said, "This is not just a defeat but the end of AAP." Thanking Rohini's residents, he added, "I nurtured my constituency with blood and sweat, and I promise them I will continue doing so. Under the leadership of PM Modi, there will be a double-engine govt in Delhi which will turn the last 10 years' vinash into vikas. We will work to make Delhi a developed Delhi, a city of our dreams."
