Sergio Chamy: Who is the real Charles from Netflix's A Man on the Inside and what happened to him?

New Netflix series A Man on the Inside is based on a true story and viewers might be wondering what happened to the real person behind the events, who are they and where are they now?

Ted Danson's character Charles is based on Sergio Chamy, a widower in his 80s who really did infiltrate a care home in his native Chile. However, Sergio was trying to uncover any potential elder abuse during his three months spell among the residents.

Like Danson's character, Sergio answered an advertisement in the paper that was seeking an elderly man in his 70s or 80s who was competent with . He really did prove this by taking a photograph of his interviewer as seen in the opening episode of the show and scenes of documentary The Mole Agent.

While Sergio undergoes a similar journey during the length of the documentary that served as inspiration for the series, he simply returns home to his family once the job is done - so where is he now?

After appearing in the documentary, Sergio received a lot of public attention in his home country and was invited to many awards shows as the film gathered accolades.

When The Mole Agent was nominated for an Oscar, the director Maite Alberdi said she was going to take Sergio as her date. She told Forbes: "He's (Sergio) my date for the Oscars ceremony. He told me it would be the last great adventure of his life, and the first time he would get on a plane. So... it's never too late for anything."

Sergio turned his hand at acting following the documentary and appeared in Spanish-language film Perra Vida, which is streaming on Amazon Prime. In the film, a lawyer starts looking after a dog she has accidentally injured, when the owner turns up, she offers to continue looking after the pet if they pretend to be in a relationship with her. Sergio plays the role of Eliseo.

Following the documentary's release Sergio started up an account where he has posted updates on his adventures thanks to his newfound fame.

He thanked everyone for their messages in celebration of his 90th birthday in December last year saying: "I want to thank each and everyone of you for your messages and displays of love for my 90th birthday (Still can't believe this profile change).

"It has been days of lots of excitement and happiness. I am very grateful for life and all those who day by day continue to count on me. A very big hug and thank you"

Sergio has also taken part in a Chilean charity campaign, Teleton, which is held annually to raise money for children with disabilities.

His most recent post on Instagram was made in September to mark Chilean Independence Day. The translation of his post reads: "Friends, I hope you continue to have nice Patrias Holidays.

"I'm settled watching the military stop, brings back so many memories of my childhood. Because at that time it was heard on the radio and it was a family event and since it is on TV, I try to always watch it. A hug and to celebrate our Chilito!"
