Bollywood star Soha Ali Khan recently spoke about her childhood, emphasizing how her parents, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore, taught their children values of humility and financial prudence despite their affluent upbringing.

A Wealthy Family with Simple Values
Talking on the QuizTalk podcast, Soha reminisced about her youth and the ways in which her parents made her and her siblings realize the importance of money. Coming from a royal family, her father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi would always act like the family had money issues. He was careful about spending, regularly talking about the cost of petrol and electricity.

Soha disclosed that her household had just one telephone, which created communication hurdles. Saba Ali Khan would sit close to the phone, while their father regulated its use and even turned it off at night to restrict unwanted calls.

Learning Financial Lessons from Her Father
Soha also learned a valuable lesson from her father regarding saving money. She used to get Rs 50 annually, and her father one day presented her with an option—either get Rs 500 all at once or keep getting Rs 50 per year. This taught her the significance of savings and financial planning from a very young age.

Sharmila Tagore’s Role in Managing the Household
Her mother, actress Sharmila Tagore, was an active participant in home budgeting. Soha has a vivid memory of her mother sitting with the cook every week to plan out meals and budget expenses, making sure that resources were not wasted.

Soha recalled her childhood as one of love, but with a sense of discipline. She also said that their family used to reside in a house opposite Sena Bhawan in Delhi. It was only when their house was snatched from them that she understood the life of luxury they had been leading.

These experiences taught Soha Ali Khan the virtues of humility, being financially prudent, and being thankful, which still guide her life.
