In India, under the Motor Vehicles Act, some rules have been made for vehicles to run on the roads. Which all drivers have to follow. Challan is issued by the traffic police for violating the rules.

And not only the traffic police, but also the cameras installed on the traffic lights can challan you. If you are breaking any traffic rule like jumping a red light or over speeding, then in such a situation also the traffic camera can challan you.

Most of the challans are issued by the traffic police. When the traffic police challan you, they can challan you too. For example, you can ask the traffic police the reason for challaning. You can ask which traffic rule you are being challenged for breaking.

Apart from this, you can also ask under which law and which rule your challan is being issued. The police officer present on the spot will have to inform you about which rule you have violated and under which rules your challan is being issued.

If you do not want to pay the challan immediately and want to pay the challan online, then you can ask the police officer present there how the e-challan system will be for paying the challan online. Or you can ask whether the challan will be given in cash or online.

While issuing the traffic challan, if you want, you can also ask the police officer for his identity card. You should pay the amount only if your challan is issued through a challan book or e-challan machine, otherwise not.

After the challan is issued, you must get the challan receipt from the concerned police officer present on the spot. Even if you have violated the traffic rule, the police cannot misbehave with you. If any officer does this, then note down the name of that officer and complain about him at the nearest police station. Or you can also complain online.
