A routine demolition operation turned tragic in Handwara, North Kashmir, on Monday morning, when an unexpected explosion during the tearing down of a mosque injured three local residents. The community had gathered to dismantle the old structure of the mosque in the Kasheri area to build a new one, when a sudden blast disrupted the activity, leaving the neighbourhood in shock and raising serious questions about the cause of the incident.

Victims Identified, Condition Stable
The three individuals injured in the explosion have been identified as Mudasir Ahmad Mir from Nutnoosa, Ghulam Ahmad Tantray from Kachri, and Owais Ahmad from Hadipora. All three were engaged in the voluntary demolition work when the explosion occurred. Emergency teams responded swiftly, and the injured were rushed to a nearby healthcare facility. Hospital sources have confirmed that all three are currently in stable condition and under medical observation.

Police Launch Probe, Area Secured
In the immediate aftermath of the explosion, security forces were deployed to the site, and the area was cordoned off to ensure public safety and preserve evidence. A police team has launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on the nature and origin of the explosion. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, including the presence of unexploded ordnance or accidental triggering of an old explosive device embedded in the structure.

Superintendent of Police, Handwara, stated that investigators are working closely with bomb disposal experts and forensic teams to determine how the blast occurred during a civilian-led demolition effort. No official explanation has yet been provided, but preliminary findings are expected to be released once basic assessments are complete.

The explosion has unsettled the local community, which had gathered with goodwill and unity to renovate a religious space. While the incident could be an isolated accident, it has highlighted the need for caution and professional oversight during similar activities in conflict-sensitive regions like Kashmir
