James Jordan reveals the backstage chaos viewers never see on Dancing on Ice
has opened up about the backstage chaos that viewers never see on revealing the intense pressure and frantic activity that happens behind the scenes while the live show is going on.
In an exclusive interview with The , James described the anxiety, rehearsals, and emotional moments that take place in the smaller, hidden ice rink during the show. According to , there's far more going on backstage than the audience is aware of, with the camaraderie between makeup teams, physios, and producers playing a key role in helping contestants prepare for the live performances.
James, who joined in 2006 and later joined Dancing on Ice in 2019, compared the behind-the-scenes atmosphere of both shows. "Dancing on Ice hasn’t really highlighted the smaller ice rink in the back, but there’s a lot happening there – anxiety, intense practice, rehearsals, and so much more behind the scenes while the live show is going on," he said in interview with The Mirror for

"People don’t realise just how tough ice skating is. I remember rehearsing backstage right before going on stage, still falling over, thinking, ‘I’m about to perform in front of millions, and I’m still falling!’ There’s definitely a missed opportunity in not showing more of what’s happening backstage."
James suggested that Dancing on Ice could show more of this backstage action to engage viewers. "Perhaps the presenters could split duties – one up front, and one behind the scenes, engaging with the contestants right before they go on," he proposed. "Imagine hearing, 'I just saw you fall – you’re about to perform that routine, how do you feel?' That would add a real sense of tension to the show."
As the Dancing on Ice final approaches this Sunday, James expressed his hope that more behind-the-scenes moments would be featured in the future. He said: "If it comes back next year, there’s definitely room for more of that behind-the-scenes coverage, because the public would love to see the real action as it happens during the live show. There's so much happening on that little ice rink that people don’t get to see."
Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean made a huge announcement regarding the show ahead of its grand finale. While speaking to Ed Balls and on Tuesday’s , the pair revealed they’ll be taking to the ice one last time. Susanna asked: “So, we’re talking about you handing up your skates. Is this the end of your ice dancing partnership, forever?” Jayne replied: “The final on Sunday will be our last performance on . Then we go on tour and they will be our last performances, we end in Nottingham on July 12.”
Christopher echoed that they’d be ending their final show together, which is where it all began for them. Christopher replied: “If Dancing on Ice continues, we’ll just come back as judges, but really, it is time for us. It’s 50 years of skating together and it takes its toll on the body. “You have to be very disciplined every day, looking after yourself nutrition wise and health wise, I guess we’re ready for a bit of a break.”
Susanna touched on the physical aspect of skating as she touched on their ages, as Christopher shared he was 66, with Jayne being a bit older than him. Susanna replied: “To be able to be that physical at your age, does require a lot of work.” The pair agreed as Christopher confessed it gets harder the older you get. He commented: “That’s why we felt that we’re still in a shape that we can still do it, but it’s limited time that we can continue to do it. “50 years is a great number to say we’ve been skating together, I don’t think there are many partnerships that can say they’ve been together for 50 years.”
