Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor has brushed aside speculations of him switching to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Speaking to The Indian Express, he reiterated his commitment to liberalism and India's pluralistic ethos and categorically denied any plans of joining the BJP owing to stark ideological differences.

"I have always been a classic liberal," Tharoor said.

Tharoor admitted to facing opposition from within his own party but maintained that his only concern is India's progress.

"Some in my party oppose me, but I speak for India and Kerala's future," he said.

Despite these differences, he reiterated his loyalty to Congress and said he would be willing to take on more responsibilities if required.

Tharoor said this will be his last parliamentary campaign but is open to serving in other capacities.

"I didn't enter politics as a career," he said, referring to his earlier stint at the United Nations before joining Congress on Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh's invitation.

He said he would be ready to serve the party wherever needed but also mentioned other options like writing and global speaking engagements.
