BANGALORE: On November 20, 2024, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Australian Space Agency (ASA) signed a significant Implementation Agreement (IA) to enhance their collaboration in space activities. This agreement focuses on supporting the recovery of crew members and crew modules for India’s Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send humans into space.

The IA was signed by Shri DK Singh, Director of the Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) at ISRO in Bengaluru, and Shri Jarrod Powell, General Manager of the Space Capability Branch at ASA in Canberra. The agreement will allow the two agencies to work together in search and rescue operations, especially in Australian waters, in case of emergencies during the Gaganyaan mission.

India’s Gaganyaan mission is a major milestone for ISRO, aimed at demonstrating India’s human spaceflight capability. The mission plans to send up to three crew members into Low Earth Orbit for up to three days and ensure their safe recovery. The IA will help Australian authorities assist with the search and recovery of the crew and the spacecraft in case of any ascent-phase emergencies.

This partnership marks an important step in the ongoing collaboration between India and Australia in space exploration. Both countries are committed to working closely, exploring current and future opportunities for joint space activities.
