Geraint Thomas' retirement plan, huge net worth, wife's family's explicit nickname for him
Geraint Thomas will retire at the end of the 2025 season. At 38, the Cardiff-born athlete has dazzled on the tarmac, seizing the 2018 Tour de France title and earning golds in Team Pursuits during the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Games.
His trophy cabinet boasts three World Championships in the same category and a Commonwealth Games win in Road Racing. Famously known as 'G' to his global fanbase, Thomas's charm peaked in 2018 when he secured the Sports Personality of the Year, further cementing his status amongst cycling aficionados and spectators every which way.
Now, after an illustrious 19-year run, he's pedalling toward retirement.
When will we bid farewell to the Welsh wonder?Thomas plans to bow out at this year's Tour of Britain on home terrain. Taking to social media, he shared: "Thought it was time we made it official. Yes, this will be my last year in the peloton. It's not been a bad run eh? " He continued, reflecting on his extensive career, "Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine being a pro for 19 years. There'll be lots of time to reflect but, before then, I've got some big races to prep for," reports .
Fans can watch him take his final ride between September 3 and September 8, 2025, as he joins the peloton for one last competition. This year's cycling spectacle will see riders tackle a gruelling 1,204km across eight stages, starting in Kelso on September 3 and culminating in Felixstowe. The route includes stops at Darlington, Redcar, Sheffield, Barnsley, Derby, Newark-on-Trent, Northampton, and Lowestoft.
Thomas, who triumphed in the Points Classification of the event with Team Sky in 2011 and has secured a top-six finish overall, also spoke about his retirement on the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast. He said: "This will be my 19th year as a professional - it has to end at some point, and I didn't want to do one year too many and be that grumpy guy on the bus who is a negative person.
"I'm still enjoying it, and still feeling competitive, but the timing is right. Wanting to go faster and longer, that hasn't changed or dwindled as the years go by, but you can't do it forever - I'm getting a few grey hairs and I don't want to reach the stage where I'm like, 'I should have stopped last year, I don't want to be here any more'."
A whopping net worthAs for Thomas' net worth, estimates suggest he could be worth as much as £12million, thanks in part to his illustrious career and his monumental Tour de France victory in 2018, which reportedly earned him £450,000. Meanwhile, his INEOS pay packet is estimated at £3.5m per annum, and his wealth has surged with lucrative endorsements from Le Col, Wahoo Fitness and Oakley.
Thomas wooed his now-wife Sara after they were introduced by mutual friends back in 2007. Recounting their initial meeting with British Cycling, Sara explained: "I met Geraint through a mutual friend in Cardiff. My friend and Geraint's friend had a bit of a thing going on, so they dragged both Geraint and me along for a night out.
"Then Geraint and me ended up bumping into each other two weeks later, two years on, our friends aren't speaking and Geraint and me are still together. The first two times I met Geraint he'd had a few so wouldn't exactly say it was love at first sight. I did like him though, and the more I got to know him the more I did."

The couple exchanged vows in a mesmerising Cardiff ceremony after eight romance-filled years. Thomas is adored by Sara's kin, yet her brother Rhys cheekily dubs him 'King D***' due to the attention that he garners at family gatherings.
