Chennai: To prepare rural students for interviews and campus placements, about 4,500 of them in final-year engineering and diploma courses from 15 districts will receive three-day training on industry needs and personality development in Jan 2025.

The programme, organised by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), will include talks by industry experts, industry visits, sessions on entrepreneurship, exposure to higher studies, foreign studies, and competitive exams.

The training, which will include facing interviews, preparing a resume and participating in group discussions, will be conducted in two phases – from Jan 7 to 9, and from Jan 21 to 23.

"Industry experts and HR (human resource) professionals will explain the skill sets required for industry.

Industry visits and personality development training will help students attend interviews confidently," said S Vincent, member secretary of the TNSCST.

"Industry visits will also help core engineering students understand how industrial units function and the relevance of the courses they study. It also helps them know the manpower requirements in their local areas," he added.

The training programme will also focus on entrepreneurship, where the students will be provided with information about how to start a small-scale industry, its financial aspects including assistance from banks and the govt. Success stories will be provided as case studies.

The TNSCST will organise the programme in districts including Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Madurai, Namakkal, Perambalur, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Dindigul, Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar.

In each district, the training will be conducted in one college, and it will have one batch for engineering students and another for diploma students.

"Colleges were asked to sensitise students about this training programme. This is the third phase of the programme," Vincent added.
