Calm restored in Mhow after arson & violence; 14 held
Mhow: Fourteen people have been arrested in cantonment town Mhow in connection with Sunday night's arson and stone-pelting following India's victory in the Champions Trophy. Some of them may face charges under National Security Act (NSA).
Mhow, 25km from Indore, remains tense but there was no violence on Monday. Hundreds of police personnel have been deployed in the cantonment town.
Markets are closed on Mondays, but even the scattered ones that do open, remained shut all day.
"Fourteen people were injured in the incidents, four of them received critical injuries. One was referred to MY Hospital in Indore with a head injury and three have fractures," said Indore SP (rural) Hitika Wasal. Police are checking mobile phone videos and CCTV footage of the violence, she added.
Police quick-response teams were deployed at sensitive locations of the cantonment town.
Indore collector Asheesh Singh said, "Peace has been restored. Nobody will be spared and stringent action will be taken against those responsible for the violence." He appealed to people not to spread rumours on social media and warned of action against those indulging in such acts.
Singh said the violence started near a mosque, where those taking out a procession had some dispute with another group, following which they manhandled each other.
Mhow SDM Rakesh Parmar said, "Prohibitory orders have not been issued so far as the situation was immediately brought under control by police. Stringent action under NSA will be carried out against some miscreants."
It turns out that a police officer, SI Sandeep Akhadiya, was also attacked on Sunday night. He was surrounded by hoodlums and thrashed, leading to a severe injury in his right leg.
Police identified the one with head injury as Pankaj Verma of Raj Mohalla. Mukesh Jariya of Babu Gali, Pritam Solanki of Motimahal Talkies and Sagar Yadav of Gujarkheda suffered fractures.
Four cases have been registered so far, in which 28 persons have been named. More are expected.
While police were tackling the violence in Jama Masjid, Taal Mohalla, and Raj Mohalla areas, some miscreants attacked two multi-storey houses at the Patti Bazar crossing and set a car and two bikes ablaze. They also threw burning inflammable material on the gate of a pathology lab.
The mob hurled hundreds of stones and bricks on the upper floors of houses, and tried to burn down two more cars.
Mhow MLA Usha Thakur said anti-national people will not be spared. "I ask the chief minister to ensure that no anti-national can raise his head," she said.
Shahar Kazi Mufti Mohd Jabir, while talking to reporters, alleged that ‘Hindu activists' shouted ‘objectionable slogans' and threw firecrackers at the mosque, sparking violence.
