Sriganganagar farmers demand full water quota
Jaipur: Around 4,000 farmers from the Karnapur tehsil of Sri Ganganagar district lodged a unique protest on Sunday morning by blocking the water flow of the H Canal – a tributary of the Gang Canal – for not receiving their full quota of 10 cusecs of water.
"This is a perennial problem of the area. The corrupt officials of the irrigation department do not take care of the canal. As a result, the full quota of water does not reach the tail end of the areas. Around 2,000 farmers from about 15 villages across three blocks face this problem every year," said Nishant Jhorar, an agitating farmer.
The farmers said they are going to continue with their agitation until the state govt assures their full quota of water for irrigation purposes.
"These farmers are in a very poor condition. The state govt must ensure that they receive their full quota of water on a regular basis. We are going to continue with the protest. Only oral promises from the department officials are not enough," said Shyam Verma, a Congress leader of the area.
Officials of the WRD and Irrigation departments of the district said they are trying to sort the issue as soon as possible. TNN
