Bokaro: A surprise inspection of medicine shops in Chas uncovered numerous empty bottles of codeine-based cough syrups, triggering concerns about potential drug abuse. Officials emphasized that these prescription medications must only be dispensed with proper medical documentation.

A team headed by SDO Pranjal Dhanda inspected the New RK Medical in Kothari Market in Chas alongwith the drug inspector and district disaster management officer.

The team found empty bottles of codeine-containing cough syrups near the shop premises. Dhanda highlighted that these medications require valid prescriptions and proper record-keeping, which was found lacking at the store.

"The presence of over 70 empty bottles near the shop raises serious concerns about drug abuse, particularly among youth who often misuse these syrups for intoxication," Dhanda said.

The drugs inspector has been directed to probe store, the pharmaceutical company involved, and neighboring establishments. A detailed report will be submitted to the DC for action, SDO added.
