The funding is part of the third round of grants provided by the Ohio School Safety Center’s grant program. The program reviews safety assessments submitted by colleges and universities, determining where improvements are most needed. With this new round of funding, Ohio is doubling down on its commitment to ensuring safer environments for students, faculty, and staff.
“Ohio remains committed to ensuring our colleges and universities have the resources they need to make their campuses as safe as possible,” said Governor DeWine. “These grants will allow us to continue this important work so students can focus on thriving in their studies, chasing their career goals, and reaching their full potential,” as quoted by WTOL.com.
Significant Allocations to Key Institutions
Among the 28 recipients, several schools in northwest Ohio were allocated significant portions of the total funding. Bowling Green State University (BGSU), for example, received $500,000 — one of the largest amounts in this round. Kent State University, Wright State University, and the University of Akron each also received $500,000 for campus security upgrades.
In addition, smaller colleges such as Northwest State Community College and Terra State Community College were awarded $459,000 and $133,500, respectively, to improve physical security infrastructure, including fencing, lighting, and door locks.
Investing in Safety for a Brighter Future
Gov. DeWine emphasized the broader impact of the funding, highlighting the importance of creating secure campuses where students can focus on their education. Ohio State University, Ohio University, the University of Cincinnati, and Miami University also received portions of the $7.5 million, underlining the state's comprehensive approach to higher education safety.
As reported by WTOL.com, the state’s continued investment in campus security underscores the growing need for vigilance in an ever-changing educational landscape.
